Discovering Horizons: More than a Dream. Discovering Horizons: More than a Dream

Edgar Alcántara Guerrero
It all began with my interest and desire to broaden my horizons beyond what was known to me. Initially, these aspirations seemed distant and obscured by the global circumstances brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused border closures and hindered the international transit of people.

My trip to Salamanca, Spain, proved to be a whirlwind of emotions and experiences that defy adequate description. It was a path that led me to knowledge, a transformative journey that ignited an intellectual passion for deeper understanding. This personal odyssey into the realm of law—specifically comparative law—focused on the meticulous study of legal regulations, in Mexico and Spain, on homo-parental adoption. A contemporary and transcendental topic in society that made me realize that despite geographical distances, our pursuits remain unified.

The opportunity to conduct research, studying and being under the guidance of an academic from the University of Salamanca (USal), one of the three oldest universities in Europe, opened a wealth of options and ignited a strong desire to further my education. The trip provided enriching experiences that unveiled the complexities and nuances of the educational systems in Mexico and Spain. My research topic proved to be an exciting and revealing challenge for my professional life, as I meticulously analyzed legal differences and similarities between the two countries. This endeavor underscored the critical importance of quality, individual rights and children’s welfare—issues that demand unwavering attention. Each article and regulation examined contributed to a deeper understanding of how social contexts interact with laws and human rights protection.
My research itself became a journey of self-discovery. It went beyond the mere accumulation of data and of legislation analysis, immersing me in the complex social and cultural realities that influence the implementation and perception of laws. This challenge, beyond theory, allowed me to connect with real life stories, understanding one by one the implications of these regulations on people’s lives and the vital importance of field study.

The experience in the Iberian country not only enriched my academic knowledge, but also profoundly influenced my perspective on the transcendence of justice, equality and social commitment in the legal field, regardless of geographical borders. USal was not only a source of academic learning, but also a space where I had the privilege of meeting and sharing experiences with students from different parts of the world.

My time at the university was an eye-opening experience, as I discovered that, despite our diverse cultural backgrounds and languages, we all shared a common pursuit of knowledge and interest in contributing to the legal field and society. This cultural diversity not only enriched my educational experience but also deepened my understanding of the universal applicability of legal principles and reinforced my conviction in the value of global collaboration in building a more just and equitable legal system.

The decision to travel thousands of miles away from my country to conduct such research was not only my most significant academic achievement but also a getaway to a world of possibilities and personal discoveries, as I found myself in a country with a different culture. I gradually adapted and began to appreciate the unique life aspects that Spain offered, extending beyond daily routine.
It was an intellectual adventure that presented a series of challenges that redefined my critical thinking and expanded my global perspective, reaffirming my commitment to continuous growth as a student, professional, and as an individual who is constantly evolving.

The experience, likewise, played a crucial role in clarifying my professional aspirations within the field of Law. The immersion in comparative study led me to pursue a deeper specialization and, over time, rekindled my interest in pursuing further studies abroad.

Everything I experienced on this journey balanced my thoughts and perceptions, broadening my horizons. The experience, as I initially said, defies description, yet its profound impact on my growth is undeniable. Beyond the accumulation of data and acquisition of technical knowledge, it was a catalyst for personal change, imbuing me with a global and empathetic outlook that enables me to approach academic and personal challenges with an open and understanding mindset. Each day, the experiences I had pushed me to grow, challenge my limits, and nurture my academic and human development.

This trip served as a gateway to rewarding opportunities in my life. Every time I reflect on this journey, my mind, soul and heart overflow with joy, as if I were reliving the experience. I am deeply grateful to UNAM, my home for nearly eight years, where I experienced remarkable personal and academic growth. Highlighting its name in an international context is not only a gesture of gratitude but also a recognition of the institution that has significantly contributed to my education.

I wholeheartedly encourage all students to seize the opportunity and apply for a scholarship to conduct research or study abroad. This opportunity transcended academic enrichment; it also represents a path to personal growth and the development of intercultural competencies.
Edgar Alcántara Guerrero studied at the UNAM’s Faculty of Law and carried out student mobility from January to March 2021.
