UNAM: A Vibrating Musical Culture
The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) is not only recognized for its academic excellence, but also for its cultural and artistic life. Within its facilities, there is a wide variety of spaces designed specifically for the enjoyment of music. It is home to orchestras, musical groups, ensembles, and soloists that enrich the musical experience of both the university community and the general public.
UNAM’s Faculty of Music emerges as epicenter of this vibrating scene. In the following pages we can appreciate the university life dedicated to music. The environment provides the ideal setting for the development of students’ talents by offering spaces specifically designed for musical practice and interpretation. This academic entity holds an important instrumental collection at the service of its students.
The University Cultural Center also plays a fundamental role in musical dissemination, regularly hosting concerts of different genres in its halls, among which the Carlos Chávez Hall and the Nezahualcóyotl Hall (home to OFUNAM) stand out. National and internacional artists regularly offer high-level interpretations.
The heart of UNAM’s musical activity lies in its orchestras, groups, ensembles, and soloists, which constitute a fundamental part of our cultural identity. These groups not only provide a platform for students to develop their musical skills but also contribute to enriching cultural life on campus.
Through its wide range of activities, UNAM, committed to the dissemination of culture—one of its substantive tasks—actively promotes access to music for everyone. The following graphic story, invites us to get acquainted and to participate in this university cultural life.
We want to thank the support of the Directorates of University Heritage, Música UNAM, and the FaM, and all those who opened their doors to us and let us photograph activities and places for music at UNAM.
